[Bienvenue au labo] – Our resources as a common good
The climate, social and democratic crises we face are forcing us to rethink the way we produce and consume in our societies. We need to review our production models so that they take better account of the overall financial, human and environmental impact. In other words, it is important to find ways to reintegrate – ‘re-embed’ – the economy into society and nature in a more responsible manner.
Research work is therefore focusing on understanding the conditions for the (sustainable) development of new ways of using and managing ‘the commons’, i.e. assets that are shared and maintained collectively by a group of people, a society or a community, which establishes rules for their use, preservation and longevity. These may include knowledge, software, businesses, machines & tools, but also land, forests, etc.
New, more participatory modes of governance are already emerging, for example in the social & solidarity economy, as are new consumption and waste management habits with reuse.
These alternatives to the current system are being explored in particular through two areas of experimentation: land commons and the circular economy.
