To limit the use of revenge or private justice and to regulate conflicts, the State has a monopoly on the right to punish. This prerogative is reflected in a judicial ritual in which the execution of the sentence is the final stage.
Until 1939, the public staging of sentences was intended to arouse fear and exemplarity. To enhance publicity, this show has often been immortalized in images. They allow us today to better understand the evolution of sentences and the French judicial system. While France is going to celebrate 40 years of the abolition of the death penalty, the debates on the function of the penalty and the challenges for our society remain relevant.
