Place à l’Xpérience – SEEING THE INFINITELY SMALL : To understand the infinitely large
The study of matter forming the universe and our solar system is done on a wide variety of scales. Observations made on increasingly efficient telescopes and spectrometers provide partial answers to the questions asked. Another approach is based on direct laboratory observation of samples from witness bodies from the early days of the solar system’s formation: meteorites collected on Earth or asteroids still in orbit. At the end of 2020, the Japanese «Hayabusa 2» mission brought back to Earth samples taken from the asteroid Ryugu to be analyzed by an international consortium including the University of Lille. Their study at the atomic scale, in particular with an electron microscope present in Lille, provides valuable information on the conditions of formation of matter in extraterrestrial environments.
