Place à l’Xpérience – ChickenPods : Randomness serving video games
Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely used and very effective for certain games such as chess or go but too often remains flawed and under-exploited in the world of video games.
By integrating sophisticated mathematical techniques (random geometry, neural networks, statistical learning), the designers of ChickenPods use chance to combat the repetitiveness of the game and generate different environments, and therefore different games. ChickenPods is played «1 vs 1» against another real or virtual player - that is, an AI that must play quickly and efficiently by identifying the best action to perform at each moment. Percolation is one of those mathematical techniques, resulting from random geometry, which makes it possible to describe phenomena of flow and infiltration, or of electrical conductivity. Like the randomly generated ChickenPods maze, percolation produces microscopic passages patterns that are randomly open or closed, and a small change in their states can profoundly alter the system on a macroscopic scale.
