Green Software in a big Company: a Journey
Most companies are becoming aware of the environmental impact of their activities and are engaging in programs to reduce their footprint. This is also true in the digital sector and big companies have all announced plans to reduce the CO2 emission associated with the IT services they provide. As a major telecommunication operator, Orange has set itself ambitious targets in this domain, for example with the goal of being Net Zero carbon in 2040. However, the field of "Green IT" is still very new and far from mature. Despite abundant research works in the last years, it is still quite difficult to deploy a cohesive strategy on reducing that footprint, especially when looking at Software; impact estimations and measurements are hard to produce, software products are still largely considered as immaterial and developers don’t generally have the required knowledge and tooling to focus on these issues. In this presentation, we will see how Orange currently addresses this challenge, especially from the software point of view.
